《嘉莉妹妹》中的新女性形象分析

   西奥多・德莱塞是二十世纪美国众多杰出的现实主义作家的一位标志性人物,他的小说《嘉莉妹妹》是美国文学史上一部具有划时代意义的优秀作品。然而,这部小说在问世之出却受到社会各界的很长一段时间的质疑和批判,认为它是一部伤风败俗的作品，会对人的身心甚至整个社会产生负面影响，不过这部作品仍经受住了时间的考验，最终获得了人们的认可。
  本论文通过分析嘉莉在追求自己梦想过程中的个性的不断转变来探讨在二十世纪初不一样的女性形象。它包括五个部分：第一章主要对这篇小说的内容的整体介绍和对新女性形象的清晰定义。第二章介绍了嘉莉是如何从一个胆小无知的乡村女孩转变为一个独立，有梦想的新女性过程；第三章从当时的社会背景和嘉莉自身的性格和欲望两方面，来分析嘉莉转变为新女性的深层原因；第四章则旨在探究这种新女性的出现对现实的影响。第五章主要对整篇论文的总结并再次点明主题。

An Analysis on the Image of New Woman in Sister Carrie

Abstract

Theodore Dreiser is a symbolic one of the most eminent American novelists of realism in 20th century. His novel Sister Carrie is a symbolic masterpiece in American literature history. However, this novel was criticized by all aspects of society for a long time, and they thought it was an immoral work, and will cause negative effect on human’s mind and even the whole society. Nevertheless, this novel stands the test of time, and it is accepted by most people, and gains great reputation in society finally.
This thesis will analyze the continuous transitions of Carrie in the process of pursing her dream to explore the different images of woman in 20th century. It consists of five parts. Chapter one will have an entire introduction of content of this novel and a clear definition of the image of new woman. Chapter two will introduce the process how Carrie transforms from a coward and innocent countryside girl to an independent, ambitious new woman. Chapter three will analyze the hidden factors that prompt Carrie to become a new woman from two aspects, the background of society and the nature and desire of Carrie. Chapter four aims at exploring the practical meaning of the new woman. Chapter five will have a conclusion of this thesis and emphasize the theme again.
