从文化多元性看大学校训翻译

文化的多元化是一种历史的必然，多元文化的共处和交流是文化发展的大动力。承认和尊重文化多元化，是文化融合共生的前提和基础。在构建社会和谐文化的背景下，要构建和谐校园文化，必须理智应对多元文化。大学校训作为大学文化体系中的重要内容，是大学文化的积淀和凝练，是一所大学办学理念和校园文化的集中体现。因此，通过对大学校训的翻译研究，我们能够体会到不同大学校训所蕴含的不同文化背景，这也体现了文化的多元性。让更多的大学校训翻译不脱离其文化，做到文化的“共生”。本文从大学的“文化名片”—大学校训的翻译出发，在收集一系列的大学校训及其有关研究作品之后，通过比较分析的方法，例举了内，港地区以及中西方国家的一些大学校训翻译实例。该分析主要从表征形式，来源和蕴义以及文化的时代发展的角度进行展开。通过对不同的大学校训的比较分析，本文总结出了以下几点成果：
1.目前对于大学校训的翻译弊端有大学校训的语言文字不理解，文字很难“译美”，难以把握原语中的文化内涵。
2.大学校训的翻译应该在不同来源以及时代背景下展开，强调“共生”理念，使译文做到坚持“共生”原则，满足文化的传递，实现其功能的对等。
3.目前对大学校训翻译所作的研究还为数不多，尤其是在多元文化的背景下所做的研究仍有很大的不足。因此，也想通过本文起到一个促进的作用，呼吁越来越多的人们关注大学校训的理解以及翻译。

Cultural Pluralism and University Mottos Translation

Abstract: Cultural Pluralism has been a historical necessity. Multi-cultures’ coexistence and communication is the most important driving force for culture's development. Recognition and homage for cultural pluralism is the prerequisite and foundation of cultural integration. With the background of building the harmonious social culture, we must be rational enough to deal with the multi-culture, in order to build a harmonious campus culture. University mottos are the important part of the university culture system, the accumulation and symbol of university culture while they also embody the school philosophy and campus culture. Therefore, through the analysis of different university mottos translation, we can have a good understanding of the combined multi-cultures, which also reflect the cultural pluralism. Besides, we can make sure that more and more university mottos translation should be connected with their culture and adhere to the “Symbiosis” Principal of culture. This article focuses on the “Culture Card”-University mottos. The analysis is done after collecting a lot of university mottos from different university mottos in mainland, Hong kong and foreign countries. The comparison will be carried out from the form, the source and meaning as well as the cultural perspective. Through the comparative analysis, some effective methods are provided to translate university mottos.
The major findings are as follows:
1. Nowadays, the university mottos translation still has some major problems, such as the misunderstanding of the language, the failure to reproduce the beauty of the original language, and the misunderstanding of the culture.
2. The translation for university mottos should be connected with different resources and times, adhere to the principle of cultural integration, emphasize the “Symbiosis” principal of culture, so as to achieve functional equivalence and culture transmission.
There are still less researches on the university mottos translation, especially from the angle of cultural pluralism. So the author of this paper aims to make a tentative study in the hope that more attention is to be paid in the future to university mottos translation.
