On the Functions of Picture Books in Preschool Children’s Visual Communication Competence
Abstract: This thesis is mainly analyzing in how picture books make functions in preschool children’s visual communication competence. With the development of the picture book industry, various kinds of foreign or domestic creation picture books appeared in the Chinese market, and Chinese parents and teachers use many different picture books to teach the children. So how to correctly use picture books to teach children become very important. In this paper, I apply the concept of the visual communication to the function of picture books, because this concept is usually used in advertising. To make the concept have a better combination with picture books, I have made some changes about the concept and explained how picture books are used to improve preschool children’s visual communication competence through four different aspects: cognitive ability, listening ability, imagination and language skills. In this paper, I mainly use the method of discussion with some different picture books, and with some domestic and foreign scholars’ view, finally I present some of my own learning methods. Through the discussion of the picture books’ function, in the last part of the paper, I have designed a lesson plan of a well-known picture book. This teaching method is the summary of the paper and will increase the readability of the thesis. Through the narrative of this paper, I believe that many preschool children’s parents and teachers can know more and more about the usefulness of the picture book. Due to the limited time, this paper still stays on a stage of demonstration of using a picture book; and the lesson plan has not been applied in some kindergartens yet. Therefore, further studies should be placed to examine the actual effectiveness of using the picture books in real teaching practices.
