跨文化交际中英语委婉语的语用研究

英语委婉语是一种普遍的语言现象，是英语词汇中不可或缺的组成部分,一直引起人们的关注。多年来，语言学者们分别从不同角度诸如社会语言学、心理语言学、哲学等对这一语言现象进行了分析研究。委婉语是一种语言现象，同时也是一种文化现象。它真实地反映了各民族历史文化生活，因而与文化有着密不可分的关系。
本文探讨了委婉语的定义、构成方式、分类、语用功能以及相关的概念。借鉴前人的研究成果，本文运用Grice的合作原则 ,Leech的礼貌原则以及Levinson的面子理论,从语用学的角度对英语委婉语在跨文化交际中遵循的原则及其功能进行探索性研究。阐述了英语委婉语在跨文化交际中出现的语用失误，并提出了一些如何消除语用失误的建议，以有效保证信息传递的顺利进行。

ABSTRACT

Euphemism，as a universal phenomenon in all languages, has already become an indispensable part of English vocabulary and has been arousing people’s wide concern. Many linguists and scholars have studied the linguistic phenomenon from different perspectives such as those of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and philosophy. English euphemism, as a linguistic concept,  is also a cultural phenomenon. Therefore, it has inseparable relationships with western culture, truly reflecting the historical and cultural life of English peoples.
The present thesis elaborates on the definition, formation, classification, pragmatic functions of euphemism as well as some conceptions related to euphemism. Based on the achievements of the previous studies, under the guidance of the pragmatic theories such as Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Leech’s Politeness Principle and Levinson’s Face Theory, the author will have a tentative exploration of the principles and the pragmatic functions of English euphemisms in cross-cultural communication from a pragmatic perspective, and then researches into the pragmatic failures of English euphemisms in cross-cultural communication, and puts forward some suggestions for eliminating such pragmatic failures to ensure successful message exchange.
