Abstract

The Scarlet Letter is a novel written by American romantic writer Hawthorne in 1850. It was regarded as a classic in the history of American literature. Hester has a strong spirit of resistance. Under the brutal rule, she does not stop pursuing love and life. She has always been true to love and bravely purses after love, tried her best to protect her child. She fought against religion and reality with great courage and perseverance. This reflects her pursuit of equal rights for women and human rights. Dimmesdale looks very cowardly in comparison with Hester. He and Hester have committed the same crime, but he does not dare to admit. He is loved by the masses, but as a matter of fact, he has tortured himself for seven years, and finally he died in the tangle and pain. Hawthorne made a thorough analysis of humanity by describing the sins of humanity. The Scarlet Letter paved way for American psychoanalytic novels.
