基于语料库的中国学习者英语书面语中重述标记语in other words的使用研究

So far, discourse markers, one of the cohesive devices, have been much explored by many foreign and domestic scholars. However, there have been few studies on reformulation markers, the subordinate class of discourse markers, up till now. The present study investigates the use of reformulation marker "in other words" in written English by Chinese EFL learners based on two corpora, WECCL (Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners) and MICUSP (Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers). It makes a comparative study of the characteristics of the use of reformulation marker"in other words" based on Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis. It aims to find out the similarities and differences in the use of "in other words" between Chinese EFL learners and English native speakers. It also aims to find out the reasons of the differences and possible implications that could be offered for Chinese EFL learners in using "in other words". Adopting both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this thesis focuses on investigating the syntactic properties, and semantic properties of "in other words" in the above-mentioned two corpora.
The results show that both Chinese EFL learners and English native speakers use "in other words" at the initial of S2 frequently in English writing and use it with "or". Furthermore, they use it to signal the relations, clarification, specification, summarization, specialization, between S1 and S2. However, Chinese EFL learners do not use "in other words" as frequently as English native speakers do in English writing and Chinese EFL learners misuse it with "but". Additionally, they do not use it as flexibly as English native speakers do in writing and they do not use it to signal as various relations between S1 and S2 as English native speakers do. Due to the language transfer and poor language competence, Chinese EFL learners also make some mistakes in using "in other words". Finally, some suggestions are offered for English teaching and learning: firstly, the emphasis of text books compilation should be laid on culture differences; secondly, that English is a language of hypotaxis while Chinese is parataxis and the different ways of text organization of Chinese and English had better be emphasized in English learning and teaching; thirdly, emphasis should be laid on learning reformulation and reformulation markers.
