谭恩美与中国形象的呈现——从东方主义视角研究《喜福会》在《喜福会》中,华裔女作家谭恩美从母女关系的角度阐述中美两种文化的差异、冲突及融合。在作者笔下,中国呈现出神秘莫测、阴森恐怖的景象,而美国则被描述为一个平等自由、繁华幸福的国度,从而进一步灌输东方低劣，西方优越的理念。生于华裔，而长在美国，谭恩美有股复杂的中国情结。因此她书中的中国人往往又与美国白人传统作品中的华人形象不同，谭恩美的民族身份使她对中国难以割舍，但美国的教育和文化影响力导致了她对中国和中国文化存在偏见。
本文从东方主义角度出发，分析了《喜福会》中的中国人物形象、传统文化和宗教信仰这三个方面，指出谭恩美因其双重身份的特殊性而对中国文化存在一定程度上的误读。虽然小说不失为一部优秀的作品，而探讨当中对中国文化的误读甚至扭曲也是至关重要的。

Amy Tan and the Presentation of China Image
----A Study of The Joy Luck Club from the Perspective of Orientalism
Abstract
In The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan, an outstanding Chinese-American female writer, describes the differences, conflicts and fusion of two cultures from the perspective of the mother-daughter relationships. In her writing, China is presented as a mysterious, gloomy and horrible scene, while the United States is generally depicted as an equal, free, prosperous and happy country. This suggests that the East is inferior and the West is superior. Born of Chinese descent but growing up as an American, Amy Tan seems to have complex feelings about China. Therefore, the images of Chinese in her works often differ from those of the traditional literature written by the White. The author's ethnic identity makes her difficult to give up China, but her educational background and American cultural influence lead to her biased reading of China and the Chinese culture.
From the perspective of Orientalism, this thesis focuses on the characterization of Chinese, traditional culture and religious beliefs presented in The Joy Luck Club. By analyzing these three aspects, it is obvious that Amy Tan has misunderstood certain aspects of Chinese culture for her dual identities. Commendable as the novel is, it is of vital importance for us to probe into the misreading and even distortion of the Chinese culture in the novel.
