《芒果街上的小屋》是美国墨西哥裔作家桑德拉·希斯内罗斯的代表作。以一个墨西哥裔小女孩的视角出发,讲述了她在名为芒果街的社区一年的成长经历。
成长小说起源于西方,作为独立的文学体裁存在则起源于德国。《芒果街上的小屋》的主题是叙述青年成长过程。通过叙述主人公的成长经历,反映了人物心理和生理从幼稚到成熟变化过程。成长小说通常能作为一面镜子,使人们从中反思自己的的不足。本文将从成长小说的角度分析《芒果街上的小屋》,论证本小说属于成长小说这种文学体裁的合理性。

最后部分是结论,对上文的论述进行了总结概括以及该小说的成长小说特征,并指出了这部小说丰富以及推动了成长小说这一文学体裁的发展。本文的意义在于从成长小说角度分析《芒果街上的小屋》,丰富了这一小说的研究方向,从而拓宽成长小说的研究领域。

Abstract
The House on the Mango Street is a masterpiece of Mexican-American female writer Sandra Cisneros. This novel, from a little Mexican girl’s perspective, tells of her growing experiences in a community called Mango Street.
As an independent literary genre, Bildungsroman originated in Europe and first appeared in German literature. The theme of The House on Mango Street is to describe the process of youth growth. Through the narration of the protagonist’s growth experience, it reflects the changing process of the character’s psychology and physiology from childish to mature. Initiation novels are often used as a mirror for people to reflect on their own shortcomings. From the perspective of the initiation novel, this paper would analyze The House on Mango Street and prove the rationality of this novel as a literary genre of the Bildungsroman.
This thesis is intended to give an analysis of The House on Mango Street from the perspective of Bildungsroman. This thesis is divided into three parts: an introduction, the main body and the conclusion.
The introduction part briefly introduces the writing background of the novel, the author’s life experience and the main characteristics of the initiation novel. This thesis will have a detailed analysis of the novel from the perspective of Bildungsroman. It will analyze the novel according to the basic features of Bildungsromans and argument its literary genre.
The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters.
The first chapter is an interpretation of The House on Mango Street in terms of characters. The characters in Bildungsroman mainly include the protagonist’s initiation guides and initiation companies. And the initiation guide can be divided into positive one and negative one. Through the analysis of the characters in the novel, different characters have different influences on the growth of the protagonist, and defines that The House on Mango Street as the theme characteristic of the initiation novel.
The second chapter is an interpretation of The House on Mango Street in terms of structure. In terms of structure, Bildungsroman mainly has three characteristics: open-ending, first person point of view and symbolism. This chapter explores the narrative characteristics of Bildungsroman in The House on Mango Street by these three aspects which further demonstrate the properties of the novel as initiation story.
The third chapter is an interpretation of The House on Mango Street in terms of content. Firstly, it analyzes the autobiographical factors of the novel, Authors usually incorporate their family background, living environment and experiences into the protagonist’s experience. Then the thesis analyzes the series of self-awakening to the final self-discovery of Esperanza who lived on Mango Street in a year. Finally, it analyzes the conflict between the protagonist as a Mexican-American woman and her living environment. This chapter, through the unique plot analysis of initiation story, demonstrates that The House on Mango Street has the characteristics of Bildungsroman, which prove that this novel is a typical initiation novel.
The last part is the conclusion. It summarizes the above exposition and the characteristics of the initiation novel and points out the promotion effect of this novel on the enrichment and development of Bildungsroman. The significance of this thesis lies in the analysis of The House on Mango Street from the perspective of Bildungsroman, which enrich the research of The House on Mango Street widening the research field of Bildungsroman.
