从目的论视角探讨旅游景点公示语的英译The Analysis of Public Sign Translation in Tourist Attractions from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

 

As we all know, China is one of the four ancient civilizations and it is the richest in economy, history, and culture. With the acceleration of economic globalization, communications between countries are becoming more and more frequent. At the same time, the process of China’s reform and opening-up is also becoming faster. Naturally, we communicate with foreigners because we need to introduce information about our country to them. In other words, the aim of communication is to let foreigners get a better understanding of our country. In consequence, tourism obtains rapid development in our country. This is a challenge for our English. Public signs, as an introduction text, are very necessary in the tourist industry. They represent the image of a scenic spot. The purpose of public signs in tourist attractions is to introduce the information of scenic spots and guide visitors to visit the scenery spots. Their functions include directing, promoting, restricting and compelling. Public signs also represent the identity and status of a city. The accuracy of the translation of public signs is particularly important. But the current situation of public signs translation is not optimistic and so many problems still exists in the translation of public signs. At the same time, the functions of public signs have not been embodied. These errors not only mislead foreign friends, but also have a bad effect on China's international image.
This paper will analyze the public sign translation from the perspective of Skopos Theory. It will introduce what Skopos Theory and public signs are. Then it will analyze the problems existing in public sign translation. The thesis will give priority to how to avoid failures in conveying the messages in translation. Some translation strategies are proposed under the guidance of Skopos Theory.
