衔接手段在高中生英语写作中的应用分析An Analysis of the Application of Cohesive Devices in High School Students’ English Writing


In the modern and globalizing society, the international exchanges are increasing. English as the universal language is commonly used in most various countries around the world, and it has been become an important part to promote the different communications. What’s more, students in high school should develop a comprehensive language ability through a large number of specialized and integrated language’s practicing to form a solid foundation for real communication. However, learning English very well is difficult for most Chinese students, especially for students in high schools.
At the same time, writing is an important way to implement language function. English writing, which is not only the embodiment of one’s ability in language, thinking and logical organization, but also that of one’s comprehensive language skills in writing, is a fundamental method to improve the communicative competence. Nevertheless, most high school students’ English writing often have many problems, sometimes they even make people feel baffled, although their English composition have no mistakes in grammar. Even high school students try to have a better master of more grammatical knowledge and more meaningful words, but the improvement of their English is not significant. One of the key problems is the textual cohesion, and that’s why high school students make mistakes in English writing.
Textual cohesion has a measurable impact on English writing and English communication, which is a reflection of the professional accomplishment and a basic demand in communication. All kinds of discourses should be cohesive, which is necessary in all communications. Cohesion has aroused great concern or significance to improve high school students’ English writing ability. It can not only help to improve high school students’ English writing abilities, but also improve their listening, speaking, reading abilities. Therefore, a good master of cohesion can not only help students to understand their reading materials, but help them to express their opinions and views clearly and be understood fully. Consequently, it is worthwhile to analyze the use of cohesive devices in high schools students’ English writing and know their knowledge about cohesion.
In this paper, 102 pieces of compositions written by high school students were chosen to analyze the usage of cohesive devices. And the 102 high school students are in second year of Fushan High School. The study has two different aims, the first one is to find out problems of using cohesive devices existing in high school students’ English writing and analyze the causes of the problems; and the other one is try to give the countermeasures to develop high school students’ usage of cohesive devices in their English writing which could improve high school students’ English writing ability.
