在德莱塞的一生中，他既是一个有争议的人， 又是一个有争议的作家。用传统的标准来评判他，人们会指责他行为放荡，思想肮脏，政治极端。评论家认为他写作风格呆，叙述缺乏理性。但是随着时间的流逝，德莱塞是一个深刻的，对卑劣的美国价值观有预见性的批评家，同时也是一个伟大的作家。
德莱塞的第一部小说《嘉莉妹妹》描述嘉莉的堕落。当这本书出版时，迅速获得成功，并获得评论家的认可，被看成是德莱塞的主要作品。

正文部分共分三个章节。第一章介绍写作背景。美国内战以后，经济，国力迅猛提升。正是在这样一个没有节制，充满极端的时代，财富的增加和表现自己的愿望催生一个具有美国特征的浮华时代，其主要作用就是去吸引人们的注意力。第二章分析嘉莉的性格特点。主要是以讲述她的个人经历，来加以分析其性格上的感情变化。这个农村姑娘来到大城市芝加哥投奔自己的姐姐，希望找到工作，通过她与姐姐一家的一段时间的相处更加展现出嘉莉的单纯与善良。接着她逐渐接触到上流社会的人士—杜洛埃以后，她逐渐变得被物质生活所引诱，而且变得开始追求时尚，这也正是她的思想堕落的开始。最后，她与赫斯沃私奔以后，特别当她幸运地成为明星之后，她变的越来越爱慕虚荣，并且随波逐流，以致后来落入堕落的深渊。第三章，讲的是嘉莉的堕落史对当代的实际意义。主要是通过对嘉莉的经历来警世当代人要活得积极向上，精神生活比物质生活更重要。
结论部分讲述的是正是因为嘉莉的性格上的堕落所以导致她到最后虽然已步入富人行列但实际上过得并不快乐。

Abstract
In his lifetime, Dreiser was controversial as a man and as a writer. He was accused, with some justice by conventional standards, of being immoral in his personal behavior, a poor thinker, and a dangerous political radical; his style was said to be ponderous and his narrative sense weak by critics. As time passes, Dreiser has been recognized as a profound and prescient critic of debased American values and as a powerful novelist.
Dreiser’s first novel, Sister Carrie, which traces the material rise of Carrie. When issued, it has steadily risen in popularity and scholarly acceptance as one of the key works in the Dreiser canon.
In thesis, it emphasizes the analysis of the characteristics of Carrie, through the narration of the experience of Carrie. It is divided into three parts—Introduction, Body and Conclusion.
In Introduction, the author and his work—Sister Carrie are just simply introduced, and the modern and the past significance is reflected from this work.
Three chapters in Body. Chapter one firstly introduces the background of writing—after the Civil War, the United States’ economy, capital rapidly developed. It was an age of excess and extremes. Increased wealth, and the desire for its conspicuous display, gave rise to a gingerbread era of American design, whose grime function was to attract attention. Chapter two is the analysis of the characteristics of Carrie. On the foundation of her personal experience, the analysis of her characteristics’ change is established. She was poor, and from the countryside, went to the big city—Chicago to live with her sister’s family, wishing to find a job. During the time of living in her sister’s house, Carrie’s innocence and kind were revealed thoroughly. Then she slowly contacted with the upper class—Drouet, she was allured by the material, and became following the fashion. Just for this, it is the beginning of the degeneration in her minds. Finally, after she eloped with Hurstwood in New York, especially when she became a star, she became more and more admiring vanity and
following the tide of change. Afterwards, she sunk into the abyss of degeneration. Chapter three is the practical significance of Carrie’s process of degeneration to modern times. Just mainly through Carrie’s experience, to warn our modern people to live positively. Spirit is more important than material.
In the part of Conclusion. Just for the degeneration in her minds, when she was in the rank of wealth, but she still lived unhappily.
