从《刮痧》看文化冲突及其成因An Analysis on the Culture Conflicts Reflected from Gua Sha and Their Causes of Formation
With the development of globalization, people who come from different countries can communicate with each other frequently. When people who come from different cultural backgrounds communicate with each other, they will tend to judge the behaviors of the people from other cultures background according to the rules or norms from their own culture. The main theme of Gua Sha is about Family, Tradition, Kinship and Culture. The story focuses on the current living situation of a normal family and their passion of inheriting Chinese culture. This paper is to find out the reasons of cultural conflicts in the film. Then we can have a better understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western cultures and defuse the conflicts by understanding them.
Most of the current researches on this film focus on the conflicts themselves. This research is to analyze the reasons of the conflicts. The author analyzes the conflicts in details from three dimensions: conflicts on parent-child relationships, education and different culture backgrounds. The author will explain them from the angles of both Chinese and western cultures and explore the reasons. The conflicts on parent-child relationships in the film are caused by two different parent-child relationships under different social backgrounds. The conflicts on education are caused by two different kinds of thoughts on education. Children who grow up in China, are deeply influenced by traditional Chinese culture, are used to doing rote learning and memorizing things. Thus, Chinese people are educated to obey the rules and they lack an educational environment to create new ideas. But for Americans, they attend to self-expression. The conflicts reflected from Gua Sha are caused by two different culture backgrounds. The differences in culture backgrounds are the differences between agricultural aconomics and commercial economics.
After analyzing the conflicts in the film, the writer find that the main reason of the conflicts in the film is that Gua Sha was not admitted in America at first, then the puzzle of Datong on American law intensified the conflicts. The different understandings of love are also an important part of the conflicts in the film.
After researching this film, we can find that the main reason of the conflicts is the misunderstanding or incomprehension of each other’s culture. Different values also decide on their different understandings of others’ culture. We should learn to understand and respect the culture which differs from ours, and promote the fusion of cultures during the communication.
