Eco-translatological Study of Howard Goldblatt’s Translation of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out
Abstract
Contemporary Chinese novelist Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in literature in 2012. And the American translator Howard Goldblatt plays a crucial role in Mo Yan’s overseas dissemination and acceptance.
In China, Eco-translatology was first put forward by Professor Hu Gengshen. The theory holds translation should be translator’s selective activity to fit the translational eco-environment.
This thesis aims to conduct a comparative study between Mo Yan’s original novel and Goldblatt’s translated version from the perspective of Eco-translatology and evaluate Goldblatt’s adaptation and selection during the translation process. According to the translation method of linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension raised by Professor Hu, this thesis selected several typical examples from the English version of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and made comparative analysis to examine Goldblatt’s translation strategies and techniques. It was found that Goldblatt has tried to be loyal to the original text as far as possible and has carried out creative rewriting based on the original text as the center of translation. As a result, he has well adapted to the translational eco-environment.
Key words:  Mo Yan, Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, Howard Goldblatt, Eco-translatology
