    The Good Earth and the Pavilion of Women are considered as masterpieces of Pearl S. Buck, which contribute a lot to her winning of the Noble Prize for Literature in 1938. The Good Earth focuses on the rising and falling of a normal Chinese farmer family, and it presents the readers of real Chinese rural life objectively and in detail. O-lan, the heroine of the Good Earth, is crucial to the rising of Wang Lung. She fulfills her duty as a wife and a mother loyally in spite of different kinds of hardship with her perseverance and intelligence. But she leads an unhappy marriage life due to the patriarchal society. The readers can get a deep view of Chinese traditional women from O-lan. Mrs. Wu, the heroine of the Pavilion of women, can be treated as a brave woman who is aware of resistance. She devotes all her time and energy to her family. As a well-educated aristocratic woman, she is lucky to have the desire to fight for her freedom and self-esteem. With her unremitting efforts, she makes it realized at last. But she never gets rid of the feudal notion completely. In fact, O-lan and Mrs. Wu share much common but they also possess certain differences. The thesis begins with different images of Chinese people in the eyes of westerners and Pearl S. Buck respectively. In this part, it explains clearly the cause and effect of the different attitudes towards Chinese people in 19th and early 20th centuries. The thesis then explains the similarities in terms of their management of family and unhappiness which result from the feudal system and patriarchal society. And it then processes with their differences from the perspectives of their backgrounds and education and their attitudes to unfairness as well. The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis. By doing so, the thesis aims to catch the attention of the people who are interested in the muti-cultural communication.
