埃德加爱伦坡《厄舍府的倒塌》中的哥特恐怖ABSTRACT “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a recognized Gothic masterpiece as a perfect embodiment of Edgar Allan Poe’s aesthetics of effect. Based on the author’s published remarks about novel writing, especially the theory of unity of effect, this paper reveals the reason why this fiction is horrific by analyzing the bizarre experience the narrator expounds. This thesis consists three chapters. Chapter one analyzes how the descriptions of the weather, Roderick and the mansion in the beginning and the literary works in the novel create horror and bring a sense of reality to this horror. Chapter two introduces the connection between the protagonists and the surroundings and the logic of the plot to examine how the author internalizes the horror in the text. Chapter three identifies the author’s hidden moral from the perspective of the unreliability of the first person and the omission in the narrative. By the means of psychological portrayal and the first-person narrative, Allan Poe endues the text with a realistic yet uncanny atmosphere everywhere to maximize the horror, making this novel illustrate his notion of effect and at the same time achieve the horror of the soul he claimed.
