A Study of Negative Transfer of Chinese Dialects on English Phonology Awareness
Abstract
As the heat of learning English as a foreign language continues to grow, many scholars have attached enormous emphasis on learning methods and cultural aspects of the language. However, we should notice that China is a vast country with hundreds of dialects. In view of the theories of psycholinguistics and second language acquisition, the more consolidated the basis of a first language becomes, the greater resistances and prejudices will derive from the framework of his mother tongue. According to a brief survey with 105 HUST students who have their own dialects, their dialects have some influence on their language studies. In the collection, analyses and interpretation of the data obtained in the study and quantitative research method were used. Based on this study, this paper analyzes how dialects in different parts of China impact students’ English phonological awareness and exert negative transfer on the overall ability of English. Some suggestions are also proposed to counteract the negative transfer to help Chinese students to grasp good English phonological awareness and English skills.
